When the Holy Spirit comes, you will be filled with power and be witnesses for me to the ends of the earth.(Act1/8). As Divine Providence ordained it., His Eminence Cardinal Tisarang visited the Church in Kerala. He was very much impressed by the wonderful growth and achievements of the Syro Malabar Church. So he sent an excellent report to Pope Pius X11 about the Syro Malabar Church in Kerala and her vision and mission..As a result, Pope Pius X11 extended the Archdiocese of Changanacherry beyond the river Pamba in Kerala including Shenkottai and Kanyakumari, the southern most boundary of India. The New extension of the Archdiocese Changanacherrys mission was promulgated by the decree of the Oriental Congregation, Multorum Fidelium, dated April 29,1955.
People of the above TamilNadu Region (Kanyakumari&Shenkottai) were rooted in primitive practices and superstitions. Their cultural, economic and educational background were very low and pathetic. Thus they were far behind in development and it was a must to better their lot all round. At this point His Grace Mar.Mathew Kavukattu, the Archbishop of Changanacherry sent priests to be pastors of the Syro Malabar faithful who had already settled in different parts of the extended area.
From 1967 onwards priests from the Congregation of Mary Immaculate (CMI) joined the Syro Malabar mission work in Kanyakumari district. In1969 CMC sisters were invited to Kanyakumari mission by the Regional superior, Very Rev.Fr.Probus CMI,of Trivandrum Province. Thus the first CMC convent Prakash Bhavan was started on June 24, 1969 at Kaliyal,Kanyakumari. At the request of very Rev.Fr.Probus CMI, Provincial Superior Mother Gonzaga, Changanacherry sent six sisters to Kaliyal. Sr.Beninja was the superior of the first convent in Kaliyal,Kanyakumari. Two sisters each regularly visited different mission stations such as Ambady,Muzhucode,Nithravilai and prepared the people for Holy Mass, confession and even for baptism of new comers to the Church.
The establishment of this convent had the objectives of bringing up the local people to Christian, moral and cultural values. Also, under the leadership of Rev.Fr.Valerius CMI ,our sisters started education ministry- the instruction of Women and Children who are generally marginalized.
With Gods blessings, on April 28, 1995 the CMC Chavara Region Kanyakumari was sanctioned and erected by the General council of Mount Carmel Generalate Aluva, during the tenure of Mother Benecasia. Afterwards, under the provincialship of Mother Sancta, the inauguration of Chavara Region,Kanyakumari took place on July 8,1995. The First Regional superior of the Chavara Region, Kanyakumari was Sr.Mary Joseph.
Right now we have seven convents in Kanyakumari district.and two in Shenkottai Taluk and a residency for HIV patients at Asaripallam, Kanyakumari. Also there is a mission house at Changanacherry, Kerala.Altogether, there are 50 members in the region .All the sisters are engaged mainly an education ministry and pastoral work. Five of our sisters are in the field of healing ministry and social work. At present the region has one Higher Secondary school, two Matriculation schools, and one special school for differently abled. Besides these educational institutions, we have two girls homes and a hostel for plus two students. ACare Centre for HIV patients at Chithankudiyiruppu, Kanyakumari.
On the whole, the Chavara Region can be said to have made a good start .Still she has to look ahead to enriching herself spiritually and in physical resources. The task now is to maintain the momentum and plan ahead for the future. She may yet have to face new and challenging tasks. With Gods blessings we should be able to meet them.
